『めざせポケモンマスター’98』は、アニメ映画『劇場版ポケットモンスターミュウツーの逆襲』のオープニングテーマです。2019年には3DCGリメイク作のアニメ映画『ミュウツーの逆襲 EVOLUTION』でもリマイスター版としてアレンジされていたので記憶に新しい方もいるのではないでしょうか。ドラムの神保彰氏をはじめ、知る人ぞ知るジャズ界の豪華メンバーが伴奏を担当している圧巻のこの楽曲。オリジナル版ともぜひ比較してみてください。

サックス的には少しやっかいな調で書かれていますが、4人で鳴らすととても明るく響くと思います。細かい音が続くので、頑張りすぎないように、サビまでは余裕をもった音量で吹くとちょうど良いはずです。テンポは速めでノリの良い曲ですが、場面によってメロディラインに切なさがあったり、力強さがあったり、色々な表情があるのがこの曲の良いところですね！

■Program Note

"When You Think of Pokémon, This Song Comes to Mind!"
"Mezase Pokémon Master '98" is the opening theme song from the anime movie Pokémon: The First Movie - Mewtwo Strikes Back. Many may recall this iconic song, as a remastered version was arranged for the 2019 3DCG remake, Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution. Featuring an outstanding performance by legendary drummer Akira Jimbo and a star-studded lineup of jazz musicians, this track is truly a masterpiece. Be sure to compare it with the original version!

"While the Key is a Bit Tricky for Saxophone Players..."
The arrangement is written in a slightly tricky key for saxophonists, but when played by all four parts, it should resonate with a bright and cheerful sound. Since there are many intricate passages, it’s best to play with a relaxed volume up until the chorus to avoid overexertion. The tempo is fast and upbeat, but the beauty of this piece lies in its range of expressions—from a hint of melancholy to a powerful drive, depending on the section. This variety is what makes the song truly special!
